Paul,
I think we have burned up this thread.

The two cones example that manufactures the dark black triangles does 
not demonstrate your "all over the place normals" nor respond to the 
lighting changes in my environment as you suggest your other models do. 
My read is it is an example of similar behaivor, but not for the same 
reasons as the original problem.  My suggestion is to start new threads 
on the topics we previously identified.
