[vtkusers] VTK Install Errors

Hello Everyone,

I'm trying to build the VTK library 5.6 from source on a fedora (Cambridge) 
machine. I'm getting the following error while running make install:

Install the project...
-- Install configuration: ""
CMake Error at cmake_install.cmake:36 (FILE):
  file cannot create directory: /usr/local/lib/vtk-5.6.  Maybe need
  administrative privileges.

Can anyone confirm that I need root access or could it be a bigger problem. 
Is there anyway around this issue without admin privileges?
