Hi,

it is not a trivial step to convert a color image to a gray scale one. It
depends what is your final goal.

There is an entire field in CG that is dealing with this conversion.

You can use just the Y information once you have converted the RGB image to
XYZ, but you loose detail of the original color image. In case you have to
deal with isoluminant colors (colors with teh same luminance Y), this
simple. technique will not work .
