Unbelievable.... VC++ was not installed with the Visual Studio installation. I guess the previous machine owner was a VB only guy??! I'll add it to the list of "stupid stuff to check" when using trying to use VTK for the first time in windows. Thanks for the help and sorry for the ridiculous question, David
