with similar problems will benefit from our discussion. Thanks.

The earlier version of the manual (which I used to create the  
vtkLSDynaReader) is 52 pages long. The one in the link I sent you is  
65 pages. They are terse, but they do describe the file format in  
enough detail to read datasets. There are a few ambiguities in the  
documentation that required examining several datasets with a hex  
editor in order to infer their precise meaning.
