Comparing the contents of vtk-5.4.2.tar.gz and vtk-5.4.2.zip shows that these 23 files have an incorrect text format:

Examples\GUI\Win32\SampleMFC\Sample.rc
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch11\Ch11LatticeFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch11\Ch11LatticeVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch11\Ch11StripeFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch11\Ch11StripeVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12CloudFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12CloudVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12FireFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12FireVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12GraniteFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12GraniteVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12WoodFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch12\Ch12WoodVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch13\Ch13ParticleFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch13\Ch13ParticleVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch13\Ch13WobbleFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch13\Ch13WobbleVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch14\Ch14AABrickFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch14\Ch14AABrickVert.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch14\Ch14AdaptiveAAFrag.glsl
Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\OrangeBook\Ch14\Ch14AdaptiveAAVert.glsl
Utilities\vtkalglib\license
Widgets\CMakeLists.txt

These files use DOS text format (line ending 0D0A) in vtk-5.4.2.tar.gz and the incorrect line ending 0D0D0A in vtk-5.4.2.zip.

I would assume that all files have been checked in into CVS in DOS format on a Unix platform.

The recommended way of fixing this is to apply dos2unix to a file checked out on a Unix platform and then re-checkin this file.

This file is checked in as a text file but is actually a binary file:

Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\Textures\earth.ppm

This can be changed using this command:

cvs admin -kb Utilities\MaterialLibrary\Repository\Textures\earth.ppm

Regards, Peter.
