Yes.
Fortunately, ffmpeg has improved since we first wrote the writer.
Unfortunately its API changed and we have not yet updated VTK's FFMPEG
writer to be current with recent ffmpeg. See
bug 4719 at http://www.vtk.org/Bug/view.php?id=4719.

In the mean time, for linux you are stuck with the version you can
download from
http://www.vtk.org/get-software.php#addons

and for mac you can try that or use the version and compile options
