Mark,

As Amy said, vtkImageMandelbrotSource is a source: it derived from 
vtkAlgorithm, so it has a SetInputConnection method but *it cannot be 
used*. Do not connect vtkVolume16Reader to vtkImageMandelbrotSource, 
just use one or the other.
