Lior-

Based on your description, it seems that OpenCASCADE is what you're
looking for.

http://www.opencascade.org/

It is very focused on modeling, and I believe will do everything you
listed. I'm not sure about STL, but I'd be surprised if it didn't. STL
is a very common format.

Subject: [vtkusers] CAD advice

Hello!

My question migh be a bit long, but i'd really apreciate if you read it,
because your answer might be very short.

I came across VTK about a month ago while looking for some open source
library that can help me perform sophisticated modeling in a reasonable
computation time.
As I read vtk text books, I realized that its not intended for modeling
as a first goal, and therefore doesn't answer my needs completely.
I'd like to describe what I'm looking for in an open source library that
will satisfy my needs. If you can recommend such libraries, or maybe
correct me in thinking that vtk is not the best solution, please write
to me.

I'd like to be able to perform actions like:

- creating surfaces and mainly solids from actions such as: revolve,
sweep, loft, extrude, etc...

- perform a more complicated variation of a sweep that can use number of
guide curves

- perform mathematic calculations such as: surfaces intersections,
curve-plane intersection, a curve length calculation, etc.

- perform projection of a curve on a surface

- calculating normals and tangent planes of a surface

- handeling splines, bezier curves, etc...

- stitching surfaces to perform a solid

- handling and distorting a mesh

*** and finally, its a necessary requierment to be able to export a
final model to STL (stereo litography) fromat. The intention is to
create a model that will eventually be processed and manufacured using
machines.

*** I do not have the need for animattion. But visualizing it will be a
major advantage.

Not all requirements are obligatory, but they do represent the general
idea of what i'm looking for.
Any comment will be apreciated,
Lior.
