[vtkusers] calculating gradient of 3d image

I have a   3D data which is .raw extension.I would like to calculate a profile which shows greyvalue over stepwidth. From
this greyvalue profile I would like to calculate a profile of the gradients (1st derivative)
and find the maximum gradient magnitude .I add an sample image which tells more than me. does anybody have an suggestion? Can I implement this by using vtk classes? I hope somebody will help me and it will be really appreciated
