Your best bet is to download VTK and build it for your platform. Do not
forget to download and install CMake (www.cmake.org) first.

Then look at the tutorial examples and work through them
(\VTK\Examples\Tutorial).
There is a wiki with further information: see the page www.vtk.org as a
starter.
Also there are books available from Kitware.
