[vtkusers] Using vtkFeatureEdges

I am quite new n VTK.For my project I want to use VTK.I am using vtkFeatureEdges to extract boundary edges.Could any one tell me how can I find the number of boundaries?Suppose for a cube or cylinder what would be the number of boundary edges? Are the numbers 6 and 2 respectively.How to separate those boundaries?
