How to visualize underground layers and cut it with planes

  Hi all,
I've got a question of whether it's possible to solve the following
problem with VTK and HOW to do it by VTK:
THE PROBLEM IS:
By drilling vertical holes within a certain area(e.g., an area of footbal
playground size), we've obtained from the holes the altitude of several
different underground layers. The holes are not necessarily at the points
of structured grids, instead they may be very randomly distributed within
  the area:

THE TASK IS:
1. read the altitude data from file or database, build 3D model of the
underground layers and make visualization of them

2. cut the model with several predefined planes and visualize it:

  Environmental settings: VTK5.0.2, MSVC6.0, WinXP, CPU:Pentium 2.0G,
  GPU:GeForce2 MX400 64M
