[vtkusers] compiling VTK 5.1 on debian etch x86_64 fails...

Hi the list,

I try to build VTK 5.1 from a fresh cvs download,
but it fails with the following error message (nvidia driver):

[ 68%] Built target vtkfreetype
Linking CXX shared library ../../bin/libvtkftgl.so
/usr/bin/ld: /usr/lib64/libGL.a(glapi.o): relocation R_X86_64_32 against 
`a local symbol' can not be used when making a shared object; recompile 
with -fPIC
/usr/lib64/libGL.a: could not read symbols: Bad value
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make[2]: *** [bin/libvtkftgl.so.5.1.0] Erreur 1
make[1]: *** [Utilities/ftgl/CMakeFiles/vtkftgl.dir/all] Erreur 2

Any suggestion ?

I really need some help on this issue.

Google gives only one hint on the keywords "/usr/bin/ld: 
/usr/lib64/libGL.a(glapi.o):"
but it does not help.
