[vtkusers] isocontour smoothing does not work in 2D

Hi,

While smoothing the isocontours in 3D works fine for me, the same thing does 
not work in 2D:

reader = vtkPNMReader()
//...
contour = vtkContourFilter()
contour.SetInputConnection(reader.GetOutputPort());
contour.SetValue(0,127.5)
contour.Update();
grid = contour.GetOutput();
NEL = grid.GetNumberOfCells()
smooth = vtkSmoothPolyDataFilter()
smooth.SetInput(grid)
smooth.SetNumberOfIterations(50)
smooth.Update()

... extracts the contour correctly but does not result in any smoothing. Have 
I missed anything obvious?
