[vtkusers] Tiff reader settings for 12-16bit grayscale images

I've been using ver 3.2 VTK for several years and have had no problems 
reading 12 bit TIFF files.  However, ver 4.2.3 which I recently compiled 
from source is reading the TIFF files as 3 channel RGB.  Any suggestions 
on how I get the vtkTIFFreader to read these files (4095 gray levels) in 
the same way that the older TIFF reader did?
