there is no such option in VTK 5.x (if that is what you are using).

there is no need for separation because of patents having expired.
You may also find that there is no "vtkDecimate" filter in VTK 5
anymore, but only "vtkDecimatePro".  Reportedly, their results differ
enough as to regard one algorithm more suitable for certain
applications than the other, but I would not know anything more about
that.  There is some more information in the mailing list archives,
