Thanks Goodwin.  I read through the messages (some of which I had found on my own previously).  I'm afraid I'm still new at this VTK stuff and didn't get much out of them.  I have installed a callback using the AddObserver method of vtk.vtkRenderWindow but it only gets called when I generate events.  I have to keep moving the viewpoint or clicking 'w' or something to keep updating while running the interactor.  This gives me about 90% of what I wanted but it's still a fairly cheesy hack. Perhaps if someone can post a piece of example code.  Even something basic like a cone that moves while you run an interactor would be fine as I could adapt it for my needs.
