In the end i did grab vtk 5 from cvs as the enum problem was fixed but then another reared its head. vtk5 compiled perfectly and the examples run. now it is a matter of getting a cocoa app to utilize the libraries which should be another long slog. Thanks to everyone for their help. Rg
