I'm not sure about the error message you are seeing, but I can tell you
that vtkDICOMImageReader is unable to read many DICOM files.  I've never
tried it, but you may investigate vtkGdcmReader: <http://
www.creatis.insa-lyon.fr/Public/Gdcm>
