[vtkusers] VTK - How to make User Select Points on Surface Interactively ?

hello,
 
I am working on surface segmentation. 
 
I want the user to manually pick some points on the surface interactively using the mouse.
 
But the vtkRenderWindowInteractor doesnt seem to give me flexibility to do this.
 
Can anyone tell me how to do this ?
 
Do i have to write a custom class which adds to the vtkRenderWindowInteractor class or is there something easier than that ?
