[vtkusers] how to interpret the color spectrum in vtkLookUpTable

hi all,
    i am plotting difference in the distance between the two surfaces  as a
scalar. the distances start from 0 and do not have an upper limit. it is not
clear how the distance values are converted to color values. should i normalize
the distance values so that the maximum distance is 1.
