[vtkusers] vtk+OS X: can't read *.tiff files

I'm not sure if anyone out there has any insights, but I can't seem to 
get vtk w/ python wrappers to read a simple *.tiff file.  vtkImageReader 
doesn't work, vtkTiffReader doesn't work.  Working from an interpreter, 
as soon as I call vtkImageReader.Update() or vtkTiffReader.Update() I 
get a spectacular crash that makes the interpreter just disappear 
followed by a prompt to send a bug report to Apple.  I'm not getting any 
messages to the console.
    I've done this before and not had problems; old scripts that I know 
used to work just fail now.  It doesn't matter if I provide the reader 
with all sorts of information about the dataset or not.
    I'm running python 2.3 (stock framework w/ macPython addons) on 
10.3.8.  The VTK build is a CVS download that I built a week ago with no 
problems whatsoever. 
    I'm stumped.  Perhaps I should try the official release?  Thanks in 
advance for any advice.
