[vtkusers] volume creation with VTK

I have never used VTK before, and i want to get an idea of what all it can 
do.  I need to create volumes from 250 tiff slices, and then do things like 
change surface threshold, noise thresh, color scheme, change opacity, and 
cropping and color gradients.  Is this kind of stuf built into VTK, or would 
it require a lot of custom coding to make it happen.  Also if it is possible 
with VTK, then how can i learn how to do it.  I read there are books, which 
one(s) would i need.  Thanks a lot for the info.
