[vtkusers] Can vtkTIFFWriter write 16bit images

I am able to write 8-bit images using vtkTIFFWriter. But when I try to write 
16bit images, it gives me errors saying only unsigned char is supported. Is 
there a way to write 16 bit images using vtk or should we write our own 
functions?
