[vtkusers] Xlib extension problems persist...

I'm still having display problems with VTK where I get the error 

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0"

when I run VTK test Apps (eg HybridCxxTests). I can see the visual the
first time the app is run, but every time after that all get is the
blank window.

I'm running RH 9, I've tried compiling VTK several times, but  and all
the other GL programs work fine. I tried "removing" /usr/lib/tls/ and
compiling/running VTK, changing the libGL location to .../tls/libGL.so
(where glxgears links to), and numerous other options without success.
DRI is not used by the NVIDIA drivers, so loading/not loading the driver
makes no difference on my system.

Anybody have any other ideas?
