Take a look at Gtk+/Gtkmm and gtkglext(mm), glade (for gui development) 
and Dia for ideas. wxWindows is a sig11 monster. many libraries tested, 
but only Gtk is more or less comfortable for such things. It is easy 
to combine vtk output and gtk gl window with all interactions.
There were some small effort... dead now (look at project Visu).
