[vtkusers] are VHD CT files DICOM formatted?

hi everyone,

I am sorry I have another "stupid" question. what's the format of those CT 
(and MRI) images in the visible human dataset. All I learned is that they 
are 512x512 12-bit gray tone images. For this 12-bit, what is the data type? 
I mean, a float-point, or an int, or something else? Are these files DICOM 
files which can be read by vtkDICOMImageReader? if they are not, then what 
kind of reader should I use to read in these image data.
