Hi Jianlong,

there is vtkImageEuclideanDistance in VTK 
(http://www.vtk.org/doc/nightly/html/classvtkImageEuclideanDistance.html) 
and itk::DanielssonDistanceMapImageFilter in ITK 
(http://www.itk.org/Doxygen/html/classitk_1_1DanielssonDistanceMapImageFilter.html).
Olivier Cuisenaire (who provided the VTK class) delves deeper into the
