Thanks. This seems to work.

python2.3 
/sw/lib/python2.3/site-packages/vtk_python-4.4.0-1/wxVTKRenderWindow.py

gives me a b/w cone that reacts in the usual way on mouse clicks and 
movements. The wxVTKRenderWindowInteractor.py seems to work, too. It 
does smooth animated rotate/zoom/translate while the buttons are pressed.
