[vtkusers] VTK + Windows -> Commerical App - Feasibility ??

Hi Ketan,
Although I am not working in the medical field, I have been using vtk
since a while on the visualization of environmental and geographical
data. We do create complete commercial apps with vtk, which run either
as a stand-alone Windows-application or embedded in a web-browser for
visualizing data online from a remote SQL-server. Speed does not seem to
be a problem to us, even though sometimes we have to display lots of GIS
maps along with isosurfaces of concentration data, and at the same time
drape very-high-resolution aerial photo (some 100's MB) over irregular
ground surface created by using DEM data (Digital Elevation Model) from
the US Geological Survey. From a certain point of view, the data
intensity of our apps is more or less comparable to medical applications
- just the data source is different.

BTW, we use vtk + QT and compile the code using VC++6 for running on
WIN. Since vtk and QT are multi-platform capable (I mean WIN, LINUX,
Mac), it is highly likely that we could compile the same code on LINUX
or Mac, without or with only minor modifications. See the following
links for details about Vtk+Mac and QT:

I am grateful that we do not need to worry too much about
3D-Visualization and thus can focus our efforts on more critical things
in our profession.

A BIG APPLAUSE TO KITWARE!

Subject: [vtkusers] VTK + Windows -> Commerical App - Feasibility ??

Hi All,

I have read various docs and seen codes about VTK. Now I am having doubt
regarding commercial quality app development with VTK. I will put some
of my points, if anyone can provide more information / clarification
then it will be great.

1) There seems to be much over head with memory usage.
2) Speed seems to be slower.. same sort of 3D / 2D app with native
windows will be little faster than vtk based.
3) MicroCT - App from GE is VTK+Windows and works too slowly!!
4) Not many people have used vtk directly for complete apps. It
has to be modified to great extent..

Apart from this if there are any other input, please share it.

I am planning to compare vtk with others for real world app feasibility.
( Medical field )

Thanks & Regards
Ketan
