[vtkusers] DEM and gtopo30 - topography

Hi,

Maybe one of you guys can give me hand.

I'm still working in my meteorological viewer. But I am having a hard 
time trying to load the topography

I want to load the .DEM files from 
http://edcdaac.usgs.gov/gtopo30/gtopo30.html
(if you any other source of world topolography -elevation - data, please
let me know!!!)
into my vtk app so I can see the topography together with wind vectors, 
clouds and other stuff from the GRIB files.

OBS:
the vtkDEMReader seems to read ascii files, where the DEMs I got are 
binary??? weird... the dem file in $VTKDATAROOT/Data/ is in ascii :(
