Bob,

DATADIR is the path to where the image data
for these Medical examples is located.  If you
don't already have it, download and unzip the 
data from the vtk download page: 
VTKData-4.2.tar.gz

In /Data/headsq/ there should be files quarter.1 to
quarter.93.
