[vtkusers] VTK/MayaVi and AMR datasets?

I just did a quick search on the VTK discussion list and found only
brief mention of installing support in VTK for AMR
(Adaptive-Mesh-Refinement).

Has there been any activity/progress in this?  

Does anyone in the MayaVi and/or VTK communities have any
suggestions/hacks/other for importing and manipulating such a dataset?
