Hi,

i just saw this question and noted your last comment
on the problem:

>But (90, 87, 1) produces (90, 0, 88).

Did you have a look at the source code that actually
performs the matrix decomposition? It might very well
be a "numerical" problem, i.e. that there is no unique
solution to decompose the matrix, given that one angle
is 90deg ...
