[vtkusers] Refreshing Render window

Hi,
   Is it possible to set the vtkRenderWindow to refresh at a specified rate. 
I saw that there was vtkSetDesiredUpdateRate but it appears to be only for 
LOD actors. The reason I want to do this is because the VTK program I am 
writing has to get feedback from external variables and update itself. Since 
I cannot trigger events in VTK when the external variables are changed, I 
want to have VTK refresh itself frequently and update the actors based on 
the new values of the external variables. Currently, the program refreshes 
the window when I activate some response with the vtkrenderwindowinteractor 
only.
