[vtkusers] Inverse texture mapping?

Hi All,

Is there any way within VTK to perform an inverse texture mapping
projection- in other words visualize scalar point data of a free form
surface as an 2d image? The projection would have to preserve surface
area.

I'm guessing that the surface would have to be parameterized and the
point data probed at the knots. Is there an easier way?
