[vtkusers] How to have images in 16 bit format?

Dear Users,
I have a problem with vtkvolume 16 reader.
I would like to know how I can save a generic image file in an image if 16 bit. 
Look likes that the format of the images that the class is able to read is an 8 bit images with 2 channels.
It is true?
Moreover I would like to use Adobe photoshop to do this conversion.
Somebody can help me??!!!
