[vtkusers] generate scalars

I have a vtkPolyData set that contains unstructured points and vertices. To use
vtkShepardMethod I need scalars associated with the points. What method would I
use to programmatically add the scalars??? I've looked high and low in the docs
but can't seem to figure this out. thanks, john
