[vtkusers] Garbage in OpenGL display

I've got a small problem I can't seem to get rid of: I've inherited from
QGLWidget and display a vtkRenderWindow in the GL view. However, when
the app first starts and the GL widget is displayed, it's full of
garbage (noteably there seem to be "leftovers" from the previous GL app
I've run). Also there's a small square about 1/8th of the total size of
the GL widget that displays correctly, which tells me that this could
possibly be fixed by resizing some widget or another. This is a 3D
editor, and the first time I scale/zoom/rotate by using the mouse or add
an actor to the scene, the garbage disappears.
I've tried about everything I can think of now to get the view to do an
update or whatever so that this garbage is never seen, but nothing seems
to work. Any pointers on how to fix this would be highly appreciated.
Regards,
