[vtkusers] constructing macro pipeline possible?

I am considering to write a application specific filter class that derives
from vtkPolyDataToPolyDataFilter.
I'd like to embed a network of pipelines within this class, so that it acts
as single pipeline element from the outside.

Is this possible in principle?
What will I have to watch for?
Has anyone done this yet?
Are there any classes using this?
Is this abuse of the VTK programming model? ( If yes please tell me why. )
