FWIW, I see the same behaviour too with vtk version 4.1.1, vtk source
$Revision: 1.1176 $, $Date: 2002/03/14 03:45:02 $ (GMT).  I'm using
nVidia's 1.0.1541 drivers under GNU/Linux and XFree86 Version 4.1.0.1.
