[vtkusers] compiling/running examples

I am trying to build C++ examples and the make program seems to do nothing.
I have BUILD_EXAMPLES: ON.
make output is
Building default_target in directory /branch/home/held/vtk_40/VTK/Examples
`cmake.depends' is up to date.
`cmake.check_depends' is up to date.
cmake.depends is up-to-date
But I can't find any executables.
Do I look in the wrong place?
