Christian,
If you are running vtk under linux you can use Mangled Mesa:
You can check:
http://public.kitware.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/~checkout~/VTK/Examples/MangledMesa/Tcl/OffScreenCone.tcl
Dont' forget to recompile VTK with mangled Mesa.
