[vtkusers] vtkTIFFReader with 16bit images???

I've been trying to read in 16 bit grayscale tiff images but it seems that the
reader scales the data down to 8 bits. Is this ture and is there a way around
this?? My image is actually a height image so 8 bit throws away alot of my
height resolution.
