[vtkusers] How do I run vtk in Unix platform?

I am using vtk in the windows platform for quite a while, using vtkJava.dll.
I need to port  my code from windows system to unix system, while doing so
the I get unsatisfied linker error in the unix system sayting vtkJava not
found. As there is no concept of dll's in unix can I get a readymade
.so(Shared Object) files for running in the unix environment? If so can you
please guide me to the sites.
If .so files are to be created by myself  can anyone tell me the procedure
to create such .so files?
