Actually, the answer is that ITK will work with Java today.  In the Insight/Examples/vtkITK directory
is an example of linking in ITK filters wrapped as VTK filters.  We've only done a few filters this
way, but it illustrates how ITK's pipeline can seamlessly integrate with VTK.  But the best part is
that ITK can be wrapped just like VTK in Tcl, Python, Java as part of the Insight build process.
