I'll only add that in the distant past I too had problems when building VTK on
Linux due to the osmesa link errors.  I simply downloaded osmesa.c from:

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/mesa3d/Mesa/src/OSmesa/

compiled it and linked it in appropriately.
