[vtkusers] Why vtk?

Hello,

since there are so many different visualization packages - why do you
prefer vtk (apart from the obvious - it's free and open source)? 
Don't get it wrong, I like vtk (most of the time *g*), and I don't
_really_ know other packages, but AVS or Iris Explorer for example seem
to have the same functionality and it seems you can create your
applications in shorter time because of this visual programming thing
...
