[vtkusers] vtk and java

Hello good people, 

I have been using vtk for over two years with c++ and tcl/tk,
and have nothing but praise for vtk. Another group in my company
is about to start a visualization project that may involve
some combination of java and vtk.  

I would really appreciate if anybody who has experience with java 
and c++ (or tcl/tk) can compare the performance of java vs. c++  
or java vs. tcl/tk. How much of vtk functionality is not
wrapped in java? How painful is it to debug vtk with java?
Are there any portability issues with java?
 
Any other comments about using vtk with java
will be very helpful, too.
